PURPOSE OF THIS POLICY
Colorado State University must adhere to specific laws and procedures regarding the handling and abatement of asbestos containing materials. The purpose of this policy is to assure that CSU complies with these laws and that proper procedures are followed when asbestos is encountered on CSU property.
APPLICATION OF THIS POLICY
This policy applies to all University academic and business units, employees and contractors.
POLICY STATEMENT
The University may be subject to fines of up to $25,000 per day if asbestos abatement is performed using improper methods, without certified personnel, or without the appropriate permits issued by the state. Permits are granted for specific projects at specific locations. Except for emergencies, it takes a minimum of ten working days to acquire a permit.
Asbestos abatement must be performed by prequalified, licensed and certified general abatement contractors (GAC’s).
Discovery of asbestos containing material or suspect material during the course of any renovation, maintenance, or construction project, requires that all work must stop immediately in the area suspected of asbestos presence. Immediate notification to Environmental Health Services and the University contracted Environmental Consultant (if applicable) is required.
COMPLIANCE
Compliance with this policy is mandatory. For compliance assistance, contact Environmental Health Services at (970) 491-4833. Violations may result in disciplinary action in accordance with applicable University policies and procedures.
