PURPOSE OF THIS POLICY

The University must adhere to specific procedures in handling asbestos abatement. If asbestos is discovered during the course of any remodeling, maintenance, or construction project, all work must stop immediately in the area where the presence of asbestos is suspected.

POLICY STATEMENT

The University may be subject to fines of up to $25,000 per day if asbestos abatement is performed without the appropriate permits issued by through the State. Permits are issued for specific projects at specific locations.

Except for emergencies, it takes a minimum of ten days for permits to be issued

Asbestos abatement is performed by prequalified, outside contractors. Emergency asbestos abatement for no more than 50 linear feet be performed by a trained individuals in Facilities Management.

If asbestos is discovered during the course of any remodeling, maintenance, or construction project, all work must stop immediately in the area where the presence of asbestos is suspected.
