PURPOSE OF THIS POLICY

The Radiation Control Manual conveys the official policies and rules of Colorado State University for the control of all sources of, and exposures to, ionizing radiation that are within the jurisdiction of the University. The manual is required by the University’s Broad Scope Radioactive Materials License and is approved and on file with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. It is managed by the University’s Radiation Control Office.

APPLICATION OF THIS POLICY

This policy applies to all persons using radioactive materials and radiation producing machines in connection with any business or activity on Colorado State University property including all research and academic programs.

POLICY STATEMENT

Radiation Safety Committee

  1. Official Charter/Authority and Responsibility: This committee is required by Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Regulations Pertaining to Radiation Control (6 CCR 1007-1) and is stipulated in the CSU Broad Scope Radioactive Materials License. A policy relating to the responsibilities and structure of the Committee has been developed and adopted by CSU. Specific instructions and bylaws for committee function are found in the document “RI-40 Radiation Safety Committee”.
  2. Membership: The Committee consists of at least 7 voting members selected from the community of Radiation Control Office approved Principal Users. Committee members serve a three-year term. The Radiation Safety Officer and the Director of Environmental Health Services are ex-officio voting members of the Committee. The Radiation Control Manual, which is incorporated by reference into the License, stipulates that the Radiation Safety Committee be appointed by the Vice President for Research. 
  3. Reporting: The Committee reports to the Vice President for University Operations and Vice President for Research.
