PURPOSE OF THIS POLICY

The policy is intended to protect against accidents and injuries resulting from the use of wheeled conveyances indoors and the wear and tear on buildings caused by bringing these devices indoors. In addition, storage of powered devices inside buildings creates serious risks of fire and can cause damage to buildings.

APPLICATION OF THIS POLICY

This policy applies to all students, faculty, staff, visitors, and anyone else present on university property.

DEFINITIONS USED IN THIS POLICY

Wheeled conveyance means motor vehicles, motorized skateboards and “hover boards,” bicycles, skateboards, roller blades, roller skates, scooters, and all similar devices. Wheelchairs and other means of mobility to assist with a disability are not included in this definition.

POLICY STATEMENT

Safety concerns, university liability and efforts to minimize the cost of building maintenance require that wheeled conveyances be prohibited from the interior spaces of campus buildings.

POLICY PROVISIONS

1. Indoor use of wheeled conveyances is prohibited.
2. Small items such as non-motorized skateboards and roller blades may be carried into residence halls and apartments only. Bicycles are prohibited in buildings, except in residence halls and apartments with permission of a University Housing representative, or in an indoor bike parking facility approved by Facilities Management consistent with CSU Design Standard 612.
3. Due to risk of fire and other hazards, motorized devices such as electric skateboards or hover boards, electric scooters, and all similar devices, whether battery powered, gas powered, or otherwise self-propelled, may not be taken into university buildings. It is inadvisable to lock these devices to bike racks or skateboard racks, as the incidence of theft of these expensive devices is high. University housing residents should not bring these devices to campus.

COMPLIANCE WITH THIS POLICY

Compliance with this policy is required. Policy violation may result in disciplinary or corrective action in accordance with applicable University policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, the Student Conduct Code, the Academic Faculty and Administrative Professional Manual, and the Human Resources Manual.
